Ling Joinery's Further Expansion with SCM

The very first order confirmed on SCM’s stand at the recent Woodmex Exhibition was placed by Malcolm Chapelhow of Ling Joinery, Cliburn near Penrith, Cumbria. The machine was a WINDOR 20 CNC Machining Centre for Window and Door Components.

Commenting on his latest purchase, Malcolm Chapelhow said “Yet again we have returned to SCM to buy our latest CNC machine to continue our planned expansion policy at Ling Joinery. Due to our policy of supplying top quality, high class joinery products, in particular windows and doors, our customers, both old and new, keep returning with additional orders, so we have to install more CNC Machinery to keep up with production and bring our delivery times down.”

The WINDOR 20, part of a £175,000 investment, will be installed alongside Ling’s existing WINDOR 60 Line which is still the only one of its specification in the UK, and MULTIFLEX Window Centres, and their RECORD 130TV CNC Machining Centre, and this will make it one of the largest independent joinery manufacturers in the UK.

Tilt and Turn Windows, Sashes and Door components are destined for the new WINDOR 20, and a majority of the Tooling will be compatible with both the WINDOR Machines. Ling Joinery are a great believer in CNC machines, and decided 3 years ago, to embark on the purchasing of the latest, modern technology, making the machining process far more easier for their operatives, with the consequent advantages of better surface finish and accuracy, thus making the assembly process very simple and easy.

Malcolm Chapelhow continues “Timber Windows are making a huge comeback in the UK, people still preferring the natural look. With better finishing techniques that we have also recently updated, the timber window, coming from renewable sources, is fashionable, whether all timber or aluminium clad for the outside and timber appearance for the inside. We supply Councils, Housing Associations, Schools and Private Builders and customers, and we have just completed all the joinery in a £10 Million mansion built in Wales, which utilised both our WINDOR 60 and RECORD 130TV machines to their maximum advantages.”

Ling Joinery purchase their timber from Sweden and Finland direct from the mill, ensuring the timber is “clean and virtually knot-free.” This ensures there is no rejection of components and the high quality is further maintained. Their sales office is generally able to give quotations almost immediately on any enquiry which they receive due to a substantial investment in new computers and software.

SCM’s Area Sales Manager, Colin Simmons, was naturally delighted with Ling’s new acquisition, stating “SCM are very pleased with Ling’s new WINDOR 20 order, and to be associated with a success story in the joinery industry is gratifying for all concerned. Ling have been loyal to SCM and they are pleased with the service and back-up we have given them over the years. Lack of skilled labour and the necessity to produce high quality components in the quickest possible time to satisfy customer orders, has seen our sales of CNC Window Centres and CNC Routers increase by over 300% in the last 12 months, with SCM UK being the SCM Group’s leading supplier of Joinery Lines and Machines.”

The WINDOR 20 has a CNC fence for fast adjustment to the length of the component to be machined. A 5.5HP cut-off saw unit is followed by a 620mm long CNC Tenoning Stack with a 15HP motor to complete the Tenoning Section. The Profiling Section has 3 – 320mm long Profiling Stacks, each 10HP motor, with a 4HP Glazing Bead Recovery Unit. Also, a small table for Storm Proofing Sashes and a Return Conveyor makes the operation of the WINDOR 20 a one-man operation, considerably reducing man-power and costs.

The WINDOR 20 is part of Ling’s continued expansion program. Concluding, Malcolm Chapelhow comments “we will be looking for even more WINDOR’S from SCM in the future, it could be a model 40, or even a model 100, and we will, before purchasing, do a detailed examination of our production requirements, to ensure the correct machine or line is obtained.
We supply ‘top-of-the-range’ joinery”, so we purchase ‘top-of-the-range’ machinery.
